Len Abbott signed up to become a radio officer for Marconi at the outset of World War Two in September 1939, aged 16. He undertook the first of many voyages as a member of the Merchant Fleet, still aged 16, in April 1940. He kept a diary, drew sketches and wrote numerous letters throughout the six years of the conflict.
